Australian Better Health Initiative

The Australian Better Health Initiative is a joint Commonwealth, State and Territory government initiative that aims to refocus the health system to promote good health and reduce the burden of chronic disease.

A number of initiatives are being conducted in WA, including supporting healthier school canteens, Aboriginal community healthy lifestyle projects, early detection and self management of chronic disease to name a few. Information about the project is available on the Department of Health website.

Crunch&Sip® is a set break to eat fruit or salad vegetables and drink water in the classroom. Students 're-fuel' with fruit or vegetables during the morning or afternoon -assisting physical and mental performance and concentration in the classroom.

Eat Smart Play Smart

A training package and manual for those working in the Out of School Hours Care sector focusing on healthy eating and physical activity, in partnership with CHILD Australia.

Fruit ‘n’ Veg Week

Fruit ‘n’ Veg Week has been an annual event in WA primary schools since 1990 and is a vital part of the effort to increase the consumption of fruit and vegetables in WA. This week is held in September each year. Resources for teachers, students, canteens and whole of school are available on line.

Get on Track Challenge

The Get on Track Challenge is a free, fun and entertaining team-based physical activity and healthy eating program for all WA adults.

Team up with 6-8 mates, family members or work colleagues and take a virtual adventure along a WA track.

Aim for 30 minutes of physical activity and 2 fruit and 5 vegetables everyday.  Log your activity online each day and track your teams progress along the interactive map. Join a set 8 week challenge or create a competition to suit your needs – perfect for workplaces and community groups.

Heart Foundation Heartmoves

Heartmoves is a gentle physical activity program suitable for anyone who hasn't done any exercise in a while. You can exercise at your own pace in a friendly atmosphere. Heartmoves is open to everyone and is designed to be safe for people with stable long term health conditions such as heart disease, diabetes or obesity. Heartmoves is run by accredited exercise professionals specifically trained in managing safe, low to moderate intensity physical activity programs.

Healthy Belt

A four week community healthy lifestyle program designed with input from Nutritionists, Fitness Instructors, Physiotherapists, Social Workers and Health Promotion Officers. Sections include Goal setting, Exercising at home, Self acceptance, Food labelling, food preparation and Setting up a walking or exercise group.

Healthy Ideas for Young Hearts

Healthy Tucker

Healthy eating sessions delivered by Aboriginal health professionals utilising the Deadly Tucker resources. Includes community cook-up and information on prevention of cardiovascular disease, stroke and diabetes.

Lighten Up

Live fit programme

The Live Fit Programme runs for 5 months with families attending 2, 1 hour sessions each week at Trinity College, East Perth. The free of charge programme focuses on three main concepts of how to improve family health, these include physical activity, nutritional guidance and psychological issues.
Live Fit is a Federal Government funded programme founded by Dion Mepham in 2008.  Based at Trinity College, East Perth, the Live Fit team comprises of a number of highly qualified instructors in the fields of exercise and physiology, nutrition and psychology compiled to offer a wide range of expertise in the area of family health.

Live Well: Get Moving & Healthy Tucker

A lifestyle campaign campaign aimed at raising awareness in the Indigenous Kimberley community of the benefits of physical activity and healthy eating, providing information on making healthy lifestyle choices. Includes a media campaign and on-the-ground programs in Broome and Bidyadanga to engage community members in physical activity and nutrition programs.

Live now and have hope for the future

This resource booklet is the part of consultation phases that address diabetes issues. It was developed to inspire and provide hope for people to turn the current negative talk surrounding diabetes around to a more positive one and, to influence people’s attitude and thinking to be on how to prevent or even delay getting diabetes.

make tracks2school - School Program

A program for primary school students in years 5-7, which aims to encourage children and their families to walk and cycle to school more often over a period of four weeks in Term 4 each year. Partners include the Department of Planning and Infrastructure, the Department of Education and Training and the Premier’s Physical Activity Taskforce.

Measure Up

Measure Up is a national social marketing campaign that aims to raise awareness of the need for healthy lifestyle choices and the links between unhealthy lifestyle, weight and chronic disease among adults.

The campaign provides a range of resources and tools to adopt a healthy lifestyle including advertising, information brochures and web tips, weekly planner and information resources translated in 22 languages.

Men's eHealth Network (MEHN)

MEHN aims to encourage men to adopt positive lifestyle changes, i.e. seek help from health professionals, increase physical activity levels, enjoy healthier diets and speak out about troubling issues. MEHN users will be able to take advantage of health and lifestyle information and downloadable resources and can also register to be a part of the 'MEHN community', a great opportunity to meet some new people with similar interests.

Speak Out About Diabetes

'Speak Out' is a Diabetes WA run program aimed at raising community awareness and knowledge of type 2 diabetes.Trained volunteers deliver interactive presentations across the Perth metropolitan area and some areas of regional WA, to workplaces and community groups.

Tomorrow People

As of the Measure Up campaign, adults of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (ATSI) descent are being targeted through the Tomorrow People campaign. The campaign takes a holistic approach to motivate and assist ATSI people to live longer through adopting a healthier lifestyle.
