It’s important to think about how you can be more active as well as how you can be less inactive (‘less sedentary’).
The Physical Activity Guidelines for Australian Adults reminds us to:
- Think of movement as an opportunity, not an inconvenience.
- Be active every day in as many ways as you can.
- Put together at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity on most, preferably all, days.
- If you can, also enjoy some regular, vigorous activity for extra health and fitness.
The guidelines provide the minimum levels of physical activity required for good health. For best results combine an active lifestyle with healthy eating. For more information on how to Find Thirty® minutes of physical activity every day, and all the rewards you’ll find, visit www.findthirtyeveryday.com.au
For people who spend many hours sitting each day (in transport, at work or at home) or those wishing to lose weight, at least 60 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity each day (for example, brisk walking) may be required to maintain or lose weight.
| Tip: Keep a physical activity diary for a week to find out how active you are currently. Record the activity you do each day, including the amount of time you spend on each activity. You will be able to see where extra opportunities for physical activity exist within your day. |
